Breast Revision

Breast revision surgery can be performed for a variety of medical and cosmetic reasons. At Plastic Surgery Northwest in Spokane, we know that even in the face of proper planning and execution of a breast implant surgery, changes in your breast contour can and do occur, leading patients to consider undergoing breast implant revision surgery.

Reasons for Undergoing Breast Revision Surgery

Bothersome changes can be implant-related or from natural changes in the breast tissue, such as after childbirth,breast-feeding, or simply aging. Common reasons for seeking revision breast surgery are implant deflation, a desire to change implant (size or type), capsular contracture, implant malposition, sagging of the breast, and combination issues.

Breast Revision Overview

The incision(s) used will depend on how much change is needed. For straightforward implant or capsule surgery, it may be possible to use your original scar from your previous surgery. If there is a need to elevate the position of your nipple and areola, there will be a need for breast lift scars. One incision will be around the areola, in the simpler cases where not much elevation is needed.

For times when more lifting and tightening is required, another incision will run vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast, and a third incision may run horizontally beneath the breast, following the natural curve of the breast crease. If the nipples need to be lifted, the nipples and areolas remain attached to underlying breast tissue, which usually allows for the preservation of sensation and the ability to breast-feed.

Breast Revision Recovery

Healing from revision surgery will take a little longer than your first breast surgery. However, you should be up and walking on the day of surgery. Bruising and swelling are to be expected. These issues will subside over time. In most cases, pain can be managed with over-the-counter medication.

Your dressings will be removed within a few days after surgery. You may be instructed to wear a support bra during your early healing period. Patients will need around two to three weeks of recovery before they can resume most normal activities. However, exercise and more physically demanding activities will need to be avoided for longer.
We will probably permit you to shower two to three days following surgery, but you should not immerse your breasts underwater in a tub, spa, or Jacuzzi for at least 4 weeks after surgery — as long as you are healing well. Stitches that don’t dissolve on their own will be removed in about a week.
